SAHARA

ON THE TRACKS OF JAMES BOND

ABOUT THE BOOK

Follow James Bond on an inspiring journey through North Africa, from the pyramids of Egypt to the rooftops of Tangier and the spectacular desert landscapes of Morocco.

In Sahara: On the tracks of James Bond, Simon Firth (Côte d’Azur, Filming James Bond in the Bahamas, Bond in France, Jamaica) explores the North African locations behind The Spy Who Loved Me, The Living Daylights and SPECTRE, uncovering the stories that connect unforgettable screen adventures with extraordinary places. Wander along through Cairo’s historic mosques, discover Luxor’s monumental temples and venture into the Moroccan landscapes that became Afghanistan and Blofeld’s remote stronghold. Along the way, explore atmospheric hotels, local flavours and the literary connections that extend Bond’s North African journey beyond the cinema.

There are hotels to discover, local dishes to try and stories from the people who worked there. Filmmakers and location experts recall how the scenes came together, while Raymond Benson looks back on the travels that inspired DoubleShot.

Featuring a foreword by Callum McDougall and an afterword by Maryam d’Abo, this engaging addition to the On the Tracks of 007 library is a companion for Bond enthusiasts, movie buffs and armchair adventurers alike.

About the author

Simon Firth became interested in, and subsequently hooked on the world of James Bond when introduced by his father to watch on TV Dr No and Thunderball. As a family, the cinematic experience of seeing The Spy Who Loved Me left its indelible mark. Moonraker further excited and by the time of the release of For Your Eyes Only, the focus of his future interests was sealed.

The subject of James Bond has been divided into its infinite parts; Clothes, Cars, Food, Drink, Books, Films, Graphic Novels and Watches to name but a few, and the multitudinous contributors and content makers who ply their knowledge long term inspired Simon to contribute to the world of travel, and film locations.

Following a love for Villefranche-sur-Mer and the surrounding countryside’s impact on the James Bond films that led to the writing and publication of CÔTE D’AZUR, Simon subsequently wrote and had published the film location-based books, ITALY, FILMING JAMES BOND IN THE BAHAMAS, BOND IN FRANCE and JAMAICA. Simon Firth also wrote the words for Jeff Marshall’s book, BEAUTY OF BOND, and happily assisted where possible to construct the story of Martine Beswicke’s life story, On My Way.

Professionally, he is a self-employed contract Project Manager working in the Telecommunications and Media sector.
